I have recently started mystery shopping for several different companies. By scheduling multiple shops in area that I will already be, I have made almost $200 in January. I have had several fast food meals, several casual dining meals, an overnight stay in a motel, a movie night, over $75 worth of groceries and other merchandise, besides the meals. I have done phone shops, internet shops, photo audits, and mystery shops at different types of businesses.

I have received several requests for more information, so I decided to do this post. I am not going to post the names of the companies that I am working for, but I would be glad to provide information to those who are interested individually. Because some of these companies have a referral program, I would like to be able to refer you to those companies. If you would like more information, please contact me in one of the following ways:

AWESOME DEAL ON H & R BLOCK HOME EDITION

If you do your own taxes and have not gotten your program yet, I have an awesome deal for you. I have used the H & R Block Home Edition for many years, dating back to when it was known as Taxcut. Every year I get the disk in the mail, which I put in my computer and download the program. The last few years, the download has cost around $35, and did not include the state program, so I had to pay another $25 that. Now, I know that each of these can be done for free online, but with the installed version, I could do other family members' taxes, and my files are on my computer, if I ever need another copy.

I ran across a truly awesome deal while at Office Depot yesterday, and just had to share. I was in the store to spend some Rewards that are expiring at the end of the month, when I noticed their tax prep display. Their H & R Block Home edition was regularly priced at 44.95, and included one state download. Well, already, this is less than I was going to spend. But, to make the deal even better, they had a $10 instant savings AND a mail-in rebate for a $15 Office Depot gift card. This brings the final cost down to 19.99. And, if you're like me. and have rewards to spend, it could be free! I didn't even have to pay tax.

GREAT DEAL ON FROZEN PANCAKES

Well, I must admit, sometimes I take the easy way out and have frozen pancakes for breakfast. I have always liked buying the DeWafelbakkers bagged pancakes at Wal Mart because they are very economical for around 2.50. Well, this week, Ingles has an even better deal. Today through Saturday 11/12, they are on sale for $2 per bag. Then, if you "like" them on Facebook, you can print a coupon for $1 off, making them just $1. Make certain you hit your "back" button and print 2 coupons. If you don't have an Ingles, then use your coupons at Wal Mart. You may even be able to price match.

I did not do much grocery shopping this week. As usual, my lists were pretty short. This is what I bought.

I also stopped at Aldi for a few things, which were 16.24. Aldi's prices on these items were at least 50% below regular grocery store prices. Then I stopped at Wal Mart and picked up a few things for a special dish that I plan to cook. I spent 9.04 there.

The total that I spent this week was 35.47, which is still below my budget of $45 per week.

I had a really amazing trip to Staples the other day. I don't go very often, so I am especially pleased that this trip turned out so well. However, it would not have, had it not been for my awesome cashier.

A) She told me that all I needed was the coupon code for the Avery coupon that I had left at home. I looked it up on my phone.
B) She had the code for $5/$25 purchase that I was unaware of.
C) She allowed me to do 2 transactions in order to use the $5/$25 twice.
D) She entered the codes in the order that I suggested in order to use both codes in one transaction and maximize savings. Here is what I bought:

Also, I accidentally picked up the Zattaran's Jambalaya instead of the Southern Home, which is what my coupon was for. This should have been caught at the register, but the coupon scanned with no beeps. Hmmm..., that's strange.

I also got 15¢ bag credit.
The total Bi-Lo value of everything that I bought was 49.37.
The total that I spent was 22.58.
I saved 26.79 or 54%. This is about the usual, when I have this much meat.

BI-LO REVISES THEIR COUPON POLICY

Bi-Lo has recently changed their coupon policy. The biggest change that I see is that they will now accept local competitor's coupons, and allow you to stack a store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon. I have put a link to it on my sidebar so that you can print it out and keep it with you for reference. The new policy reads as follows:

Coupons must be presented at the beginning of the checkout transaction, along with your Bi-Lo Bonuscard.
Manufacturer and store coupons will only be redeemed on or before expiration date.
One manufacturer and one store coupon can be redeemed per item.

I had a really good trip to CVS this week. I had a few great coupons from the magic coupon machine, which made for some awesome deals. I had the $1 off Pringles to-go cans, but my store did not have them, so they let me use it on the Super Stack cans, which were on sale for 1.33. This is what I bought, in 2 separate transactions.

I took it to the service desk to be reimbursed the 1.17 difference. They checked the shelf and found that I was correct, although the tag should have been removed. Instead of refunding me the 1.17, they refunded me 4.69, the full purchase price, as is their policy. I explained that I would be satisfied with just the 1.17 difference, but she said no. This brought my total spent to 2.26 plus tax. It made my savings 61.30 or 96%. 37.94 of this was coupons!

In my junk mail last week, I received what appeared to be a Wal Mart ad. It had a bunch of "junk mail type" items stuffed inside ot it. However, on the inside page, in an insertr called "Smart Market", there were 5 really great coupons. They were:

RITE AID CHANGES THEIR COUPON POLICY

Rite Aid has made a major change in their coupon policy, which will probably change the way a lot of us shop there. They will no longer accept a "Buy One Get One Free "coupon along with a "Buy One Get One" sale item. They also no longer allow you to use 2 coupons on a BOGO deal, even if you are purchasing two products. And remember, you do have to buy two in order to get the sale price. One good change is that they will now allow you to use a coupon on your "buy" item, even if you are using a BOGO coupon. This is a practiced that they stopped recently, but have now put it in their policy that they will once again do this. To see their full policy, click HERE.

There is also a $3 +Up Reward when you buy $10 worth. To make this deal even better, there was a coupon for $5 off of $10 worth of Wet & Wild products in the September issue of All You magazine. So you can get $20 worth of products for around $2 plus tax. Just make certain that you buy at least $10 worth. It may mean that you have to buy just under $11, because all of the prices end with ".99" My purchase was 10.97 for 6 products minus $5 coupon. Then I received the $3 +Up. Awesome deal.

I am often asked about copying coupons. While most people know it is illegal, there are still those who do not. There are also those who think that if 2 printed coupons have the same bar code, then one of them is copied. This is not necessarily true. This post is to point out the differences. "Like" coupons always have the same bar code. It would be virtually impossible for insert coupons to have different bar codes, and the same is true for printed ones.

If you look closely at the dotted outline, you will see coupon value, expiration date, date and time it was printed, and maybe even an offer number embedded in the there. On most of these, the time is very significant. If a coupon is photocopied, the time will be exactly the same. If it is not, in most cases, the time will be different, even if it's just a few seconds. Some of this info is also embedded below the expiration date.

Most coupons.com coupons have a dot matrix code in the upper right section. The serial numbers on legitimately printed coupons are normally different.

Smartsource coupons normally have an offer number printed on them and a pin number. The pin number will be different on 2 legitimately printed coupons.

Make certain that you are aware of the differences on your duplicate coupons, so that you can nicely point them out to your cashier if you ever have a problem with this. Cashiers are trained to be careful, and many are afraid of losing their jobs.

Remember, always be considerate, and if you can not resolve your issue with the cashier, ask for a member of management or go to Customer Service after you finish your checkout.

Remember, most coupon & manufacturer's website allow you to print 2 coupons per computer. This is totally legitimate. It is illegal to photocopy coupons, and if you do so, you will be guilty of coupon fraud.

I had intended to only get 1 Publix bag. There was a coupon in Publix's yellow flier for a free bag wyb 2 participating products. In this case, I bought 2 Cover Girl products. However, when I got to the register, my cashier told me that she had a coupon for a free bag wyb 3. So I got 4 and paid for 2. But then, as I was going over my receipt, I realized that I had been charged 3.69 for the eye shadow, but the shelf marker said 2.99. I went to the service desk for a refund of 1.40. Instead I was given back 4.37 (plus tax). When I questioned this, I was reminded of their policy. If an items rings up incorrectly, you get the first one free.
So, this how it breaks down:

Total before sales and coupons was 33.37 plus tax.
The total that I paid was 10.23 plus tax.
I saved 23.14 or 69%.
After the refund of 4.38 my final payment was 5.85, which was less than the price of the Coke.

MY VIEWS ON TLC'S EXTREME COUPONING SHOW

Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of reality shows. I have never watched Survivor or Amazing Race or any of the many shows of this nature. I would also like to point out that this show was done as entertainment and is not realistic. This is NOT how the normal couponer shops. While most of us have a stockpile, and many of us have a large amount of a few items, the amount of excess food that these people bought is just appalling. I believe that they were told to plan the most extreme trip that they could, and that is what they did. If not, no one would watch.

The stores that most of us shop have very strict rules when it comes to discounts, and I do not believe that any of them would allow me to call friends to come help me check out in order to get more discounts. I also do not believe any store that I shop would allow me to do 18 smaller transactions to take advantage of their already generous discounts. Nor would they order 1100 boxes of cereal for me because they are giving me $1 off as a store discount for every box that I purchase. It's just not good business sense.

Another thing that is not addressed on the show is how much money these people spend for coupons. Most of them have to purchase coupons from a clipping service in order to buy like this, and even though the price is minimal per coupon, this does add up. A $5 coupon could cost as much as 50¢ or more, plus shipping fees. I would never pay for coupons to buy something that I'm probably not going to use. Who needs 35 large bottles of Maalox? I also feel it is totally wrong to buy over 60 bottles of mustard and just leave one bottle on the shelf for the store's many other customers. That is just not being considerate of others. And who needs this much mustard. My family uses 3 or 4 bottles a year. That much would last me 15 years or more.

And what about the expense of their storage? Most of them either purchased or built shelving and other items for storing their stockpiles. One of them even talked about the fact that their stockpile is insured. That, in my opinion, is ridiculous!

Now, while it may be fun to save 90%-99% on your grocery order, this is not the average. I have done that, but I bought little or no meat or produce. I only bought the items that were free or almost free with my coupons. If I needed meat or produce, I still had to go to another store for them, and I guarantee the savings were 50% or less.

So, in a nutshell:
This show was mostly fiction. While these shopping trips were done, and these savings were received, policies were broken and coupons were used fraudulently in order to make the show more interesting. It does not depict the kind of couponer that I want to be.
